Mahavir Jayanti

Mahavir Jayanti is one of the significant religious celebrations in India. The day is most significant to the Jains as Mahavira is regarded as the last Tirthankara. The day is celebrated mainly with the purpose of commemorating the birth anniversary of Lord Mahavir. The festival is celebrated with a lot of enthusiasm throughout India.

Mahavira was born in 615 BC though there is a contrary belief which says that he was born in 599 BC. He is believed to be the son of Siddharta and Trisala. The expected mother is believed to have seen 16 auspicious dreams. The interpretation of the dream stated that he would be the emperor of Teerthankar.

The day is mainly celebrated among the Jain community. However, it percolates to the rest of the society as well. The day is mainly celebrated by organizing a grand chariot procession. The Jain community also visits the various sacred sites and engages themselves in worshipping the Tirthankaras.
