City Palace Udaipur

Introduction to City Palace:

As a means of commemorating the foundation of his new capital, Udaipur, Maharana Udai Singh ordered the construction of the City Palace, Udaipur, which was destined to be one of the largest palaces in the world as well as a major tourist attraction of the Lake City of Udaipur. The foundation that was laid down by Udai Singh was followed by his descendents which have left the mark of centuries of construction styles resulted on the City Palace, Udaipur as we see it today.

Getting There

Air:

24 km. away from Udaipur city is the Dabok Airport which is well-connected to almost all the major cities of India like New Delhi, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Ahmedabad, Aurangabad and Mumbai.

Rail:

The nearest Railway Station is at Udaipur is connected to and from Chittrogarh, Ajmer, Jaipur and Delhi.

Road:

A well-maintained network of roads link Udaipur to various Indian cities like Ahmedabad, Ajmer, Delhi, Jaipur, Chittrogarh, Indore, Kota, Mount Abu and Mumbai.

Architecture

The city palace, Udaipur, which is constructed in styles influenced by both Rajput as well as Chinese styles of architecture, is decorated with gardens, fountains and palaces that have maintained their feel of regal pride and cultural harmony over the years, mesmerizing visitors from all across the world even today. The oldest part of the palace is the Raj Aangan or the Royal Courtyard which was built around the 16 th century. Perhaps the most enigmatic part of the palace is the Krishna Vilas, the room built in memory of the princess Krishna Kumari who committed suicide in extremely tragic circumstances. It is said that the princess still haunts the palace, built in her memory by her father.

The Mor Chowk is another important portion of the palace where glass mosaics of peacocks are set in walls.
