Jantar Mantar, Jaipur

Rajasthan, the largest state of India in terms of area, is the most colorful region in the country exhibiting grandeur and royalty. Renowned as a land of valiance and chivalry , this North Indian state is bestowed with indomitable forts, magnificent palaces, waves of sand dunes and unruffled lakes. You can also be captivated by the imposing monuments of Rajasthan .

Monuments of Rajasthan

Renowned as the Desert Jewel of India , Rajasthan dazzles with its several imposing forts, palaces, temples, observatories, havelis, etc. The magnificent Rajputana architecture or the blend of Mughal style at times makes a remarkable sight from outside, while the lovely interiors adorned with paintings, mirror work, portraits, carvings etc makes the inside attractive.

Jantar Mantar, Jaipur

One of the fascinating tourist spots in Jaipur, the Pink City of India, is the Jantar Mantar , the largest of the five observatories built by Sawai Raja Jai Singh. Jantar Mantar derives its name from the Sanskrit terms yantra and mantra, with the former meaning an instrument while the latter means formulae. Built between 1728 -1734, Jantar Mantar was conceived as a quest for discovering the mysteries of the Cosmos by Sawai Jai Singh, who himself patterned the stone and masonry instruments of this observatory.

Jantar Mantar is a popular destination for scholars, and a visit to the observatory makes tourists realize that the Rajput rulers were very scholarly and sharp-eyed. They had prepared instruments like Kranti Yantra (to measure the latitude and longitude of the planetary bodies), the Diganta Yantra (to measure the azimuth of the celestial bodies), the Jai Prakash Yantra (to locate the celestial body exactly), the big sundial Samrat Yantra , and other instruments such as the Rashivalayas Yantra, Dakshina Yantra, Disha Yantra, Unnathamsa Yantra, Raj Yantra, Narivalya Yantra and the Dhruv Yantra .
