| The History of Ajmer, India dates back to more than a millennium. Ajmer, like most other Cities in Rajasthan, is a rich in historical evidences that draws tourists in large numbers.
The city of Ajmer in Rajasthan in India was founded by Ajaipal Chauhan in the early seventh century A.D. Ajaipal Chauhan was responsible for constructing the Ajmer Fort. Initially, Ajmer was named as 'Ajaimeru' which meant 'an invincible hill'. Till 1194, Ajaipal Chauhan had a strong foothold over Ajmer.
Ajaipal Chauhan was succeeded by the legendary Rajput ruler, Prithviraj Chauhan. It was during the reign of Prithviraj, that Muhammad Ghori from Afghanistan invaded India in 1191. In the fierce that followed between the Rajputs and Afghans, Prithviraj died while fighting the Sultan's army thus marking the defeat of the Rajputs and the establishment of the Sultanate in Delhi.
Till the year 1326, Ajmer was governed by the Delhi Sultanate. Thereafter, acquiring Ajmer became the point of conflict between the four kingdoms namely:
Sultans of Delhi
Sultans of Gujarat
Ranas of Mewar
Rathors of Marwar
Finally peace was restored in 1556 A.D., following the arrival of Emperor Akbar to the Mughal throne. It was Akbar who transformed Ajmer into a full fledged province. He secured the city with fortifications. Akbar's palace in Ajmer is known as the Daulat Khana.
Jahangir, son of Akbar, stayed at Ajmer from 1613 to 1616. He later built his palace here and called it Daulat Bagh. Sir Thomas Roe, the famous ambassador, who came from England during the reign of Jahangir, was received by the emperor in Daulat Bagh.
The year 1659 is extremely significant in the History of Ajmer. It was here that a battle was fought between the Mughal princes, Aurangzeb and Dara Sikoh, both of whom were sons of Emperor Shah Jahan.
Ajmer was affected by the political chaos in Delhi in the first half of the eighteenth century during the reign of the Rathors. The situation was worsened with the involvement of the Marathas in 1755. Finally in 1818, Ajmer was officially handed over to Sir David Ochterlony, by the Marathas. From then onwards till independence, Ajmer remained as a part of the British Empire, under the supervision of various governors.
After Independence, the erstwhile princely states of Rajasthan were reorganized. From then on, Ajmer became a part of the State of Rajasthan.
Today, Ajmer has a lot of historical evidences of its glorious past to offer its visitors. While some of such evidences have faded or got destroyed with time, yet a significant portion of it still remains.
The only remains of early years of Ajmer are the Ajmer Fort and the picturesque Anasagar Lake, which was built by Anaji in the year 1150. The life of the last ruler of the Chauhan Clan, namely Prithviraj Chauhan, has inspired the creation of numerous heroic ballads that are popular and also sung till date in various parts of Rajasthan.
Out of the entire fortification constructed by Akbar in Ajmer, only parts of the long wall measuring 3735 meters still exist. Daulat Khana, houses the Government Museum. The Daulat Bagh is also in ruins.
