History of Bikaner

Bikaner Tours, city of Bikaner,History of BikanerIntroduction:
Melodious notes of mystical songs sung by the nomadic tribes of the desert welcome you across the sand dunes as soon as dusk begins to set in all across the desert city of Bikaner. Almost every grain of sand that covers this medieval land has a story to relate to the strangers who set foot on this mystic paradise…a story of times gone by, of brave princes and beautiful princesses in an age when chivalry was the order of the day. One of the most popular provinces to visit, while on a holiday in Rajasthan, Tours to Bikaner are made even more special by the rich History of Bikaner.

History of Bikaner:
Like the rest of the History of Rajasthan, the history of Bikaner dates back to medieval times, when the city was established by Rao Bikaji in the 15th century. Once after a slight tiff at home with his father Rao Jodhaji of Jodhpur, the young prince left home to establish his own identity. In this purpose, he was influenced to a large extent by the predictions of Karni Devi, one of the most revered saints of Rajasthan, who promised the young prince that he would one day rule over a kingdom which was to be even bigger and more powerful than that of his father, Rao Jodhaji of Jodhpur.

The city of Bikaner was founded in the year 1488 and was helped to grow richer and prosper thanks to its brilliant location at one of the most strategic pints on the famous trade route of Rajasthan. An added advantage though, provided in a disguised form was the harshness of the geographical as well as the climatic conditions of the Thar Desert, which provided adequate security to the residents of the city from external dangers.

As a result, the city of Bikaner began to flourish as time went by and was soon transformed into one of the most important trading centers in Rajasthan, a trait which still survives in the city to this day. The security of Bikaner remained intact till the early 16th century, when the armies of Akbar finally managed to take the city over. The Maharaja of Bikaner always strove to take his state forward in all the sense of the term. Thus, began a process of development of the technical prowess of the state which had a direct result when the state of Bikaner became the first princely state in 1866 to introduce electricity. The trend also continued through the efforts of the Maharaja Ganga Singh in the 20th century, when he established the Bikaner Camel Corps, a division of the Indian defense network, which even today guards the borders of India with Pakistan as a part of the Border Security Force.
