History of Bikaner
Previously known as Jangladesh, the city of Bikaner goes back to the medieval era. The city was founded during the 15th century by Rao Bikaji. Rao Bikaji after a tussle with Rao Jodhaji of Jodhpur, who was his father, left to make his own identity. Rao Bikaji then set on to build an empire which would as predicted by Karni Devi, one of the famous Rajasthan saints, become more powerful and bigger than his father's.
Established in 1488, the city of Bikaner with time became one of the most prosperous and richest places of Rajasthan. The perfect location of the city made Bikaner a principal trade route of the state. With time Bikaner flourished and soon became a principal center of trading of this state.
In addition, the inhospitable topography and weather conditions of the Great Indian Desert provided security to this city. However with the invasion of Akbar in Bikaner during the 16th century, the city fell in the hands of Mughal Empire.
Development of Bikaner
The different rulers who have ruled the princely city of Bikaner have helped in the development of the place. Electricity was introduced in this city in the year 1866. 20th century saw the establishment of the Camel Corps which is a network division of Indian defense. Camel Corps in Bikaner was introduced by Maharaja Ganga Singh. In the present day, Camel Corps which has become part of Border Security Force protects India's borders with Pakistan.
