Samode, located 42 km to the north-west of Jaipur, is known as the gateway of Shekhawati, which holds immense historical significance in the history of Rajasthan. The history of Samode Rajasthan therefore, like most princely states in Rajasthan, is an interesting one.
Samode was the seat of the Nathawats, who played an important role in the court of Jaipur. The Nathawats served the court of Jaipur as Prime Ministers. The Samode Village was given by a Kachhwaha leader of Amber, to one of his twelve sons and later formed the seat of the Nathawats who built a fortified haveli and palace at the village. The Samode palace is known for the high quality and details of its frescos.
The Samode Palace is an important landmark in the history of Samode and is now a very popular destination for foreign tourists because of the Sheesh Mahal- Palace of mirrors. Known to be one of the finest in Rajasthan, the Sheesh Mahal, the jewel-like hall of mirrors is breath taking. Adjoining the Sheesh Mahal is the Darbar Hall or courtroom. Every inch of the wall in the darbar hall is covered with frescos- in the Rajput miniature tradition. Whenever the women of the royal family wanted to see the proceedings of the court, they sat by the windows with filigree work and viewed the proceedings through slits.
The Sheesh Mahal is an interesting feature of royal palaces mainly to be viewed in the Northern and North Western part of India. This architectural finery was brought in by the Mughals and soon spread among the native kings as well, just as the Mughal Empire did. The sheesh mahal in Amber palace in Rajasthan is also a mind blowing feature of the palace. The Rajput kings, who had fine aesthetic inclinations and the money to pursue their fancy, built these sheesh mahals; the walls and ceilings of the sheesh mahals are covered with tiny bits of mirrors, bedazzling the beholder with their splendor.
The history of Samode in India is a rather peaceful one with no major battle or bloodshed scarring the village. The Samode palace has lately been converted into a luxury heritage hotel run by the royal family. The huge maintenance cost demanded by the royal mansions and palaces, often became a burden for the royal families after the independence, when they were stripped of much of their land and power. The royal families them comfortably turned them into heritage hotels to cope up with the expenses and utilizing their resources.
