There is a mystery about the origin of Bhutan as the most valuable documents were lost in fires and earthquakes that raged the country. Western Bhutan is renowned the world over for its bewitching beauty comprising of pretty paddy farms, majestic mountains and the ravishing rivers flowing through the towns of Paro, Thimphu and Punakha. The western Bhutan also has unique architectural style of two-story houses, which have brightly painted window designs.

Western Bhutan is separated from Central Bhutan by the Black Mountains. The region of Central Bhutan comprises of Trongsa and the valleys of Bumthang including Chumey, Choekar, Tang and Ura valleys. The passes in this region are Yotang La and Thrumsing La. Central Bhutan is well known for the production of the buckwheat and apples, strong stone houses and several monasteries.

The Eastern Bhutan comprises of Mongar, Lhuentse, Trashigang and Trashi Yangste. The Passes of this region are Rodang La and Narphung La. Both these passes are at comparatively lower altitudes than the passes in Western and Central Bhutan. This region experiences a warmer climate and hence is suitable for production of corn, rice, wheat, potatoes and lemon grass. The hand-loomed textiles of the Eastern Bhutan are especially renowned and the weavers are the masters of the Supplementary Weft-Weave Technique.
