Idukki is perhaps one of the most gifted regions in Kerala. With high ranges of altitude varying from 2500 feet above sea level, Idukki is the district where forest and wild life abound. More than half this area is reserved forest, much of which is home to a variety of flora and fauna. This forest area houses several wild animals. The district's name, 'Idukki' is supposed to be derived from the Malayalam word 'Idukku' which means a narrow gorge. That could be true, for narrow steep-sided valleys is not a strange phenomenon in this hilly district flanked by the Western Ghats in the East. For the people of Kerala, Idukki is synonymous with power generation. About 66% of the State's Power needs come from the Hydroelectric Power Projects in Idukki. 
A landlocked district , Idukki is one of the most beautiful districts of Kerala in India. High ranges and wooded valleys are girded by three rivers - Periyar, Thalayar and Thodupuzhyar - and their tributaries. The sacred river Pamba also originates from the mountain ranges here.
Idukki is also known as The Land of Spices. Idukki can also claim its place in the sun in the world of spices. It was the pepper and cardamom harvested from these regions which put India on the map of the ancient world. The tradition endures to this day. Idukki is today the source of most of the world's spices. The turn of the century also saw huge tea estates coming up in Munnar, a hill station about 5000-6000 feet above sea level. The intrepid British planters wisely used the local expertise and the tribal knowledge to make this area a major source of tea in the world.
