Holidays in Kurseong

Holidays in KurseongThe King of Sikkim conceded Kurseong to the British in 1835 AD. it was a small village, which gained prominence in 1880s, when the Darjeeling-Himalayan Railway was extended to Kurseong. Kurseong was made the Headquarters of the Sub-Division on 23rd August, 1880 AD. The hill station is situated at an altitude of 4,860 ft from the sea level and is 33 km from Darjeeling. The famous "Toy Train" or the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway runs on the same level with the street and one can enjoy the fun of shopping without leaving the seat. You can get the incredible view of the majestic Mt. Kanchenjunga. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is listed in the UNESCO's World Heritage Site. The Eagle's Crag presents the view of the plains lying.

At a distance of 4 km from Kurseong Railway Station, is the Eastern Forest Rangers' College (EFRC). It is a graceful mansion set deep in the woods of St. Mary's Hill. Earlier the campus was the St. Mary's seminary and the first example of such a seminary to the east of Suez. The statues of Jesus and Mary and the newly constructed St. John's Church are also located on the same hill. These are fine specimen of contemporary architectural genius.

The tourists have plenty of options for casual walks on their vacations at Kurseong. One can easily pass their time watching the beautiful plantation of the White orchids, which grow in plenty in Kurseong. A leisurely walk to the nearby Tea Gardens is also a nice option. The Sericulture Farm and an All India Radio Station are on the Pankhabari Road. The Kettle Valley Picnic Spot at Dilaram Tea Estate is situated on the banks of the river Rinchengtong. It is an ideal place for picnic lunches and to play with crystal clear cold waters and gaze at the snow-covered mountains. The walk through the forest of Cryptomaria japonica, now called Aranya Sarani, leads to the vast open meadows at Chimney. The place is reminder of the days, when there was a Bungalow with a long chimney at this place on the Old Military Road. Another walk is through the Nagatri Spur through the forests and tea gardens.

Kurseong offers opportunities for trekking to the surrounding areas. The most popular one day trekking route is from Kurseong to Mirik via Namsu and Balasun River. The Tourism Department organizes such trekking in groups.
