Known as the Queen of Hills in Maharashtra, Tour to Mahabaleshwar is popular as a weekend getaway. Mahabaleshwar was the summer capital of the erstwhile Bombay Presidency. A popular town, with an air of unspoilt beauty, is situated at an altitude of 1,372 m. The terraced hills and fertile valleys of Mahabaleshwar are a welcome escape from the noise and fumes of Mumbai and Pune. The town was initially set up as the Health Resort in 1829 A.D. The town dotted with tidy bungalows and old churches is reminiscent of the colonial era. In the 19th century, as soon as the sanatorium was founded, an open jail reformatory center was established. Convicts from China and Malaysia were stationed here. They were involved in constructing roads, grinding corn flour, maintaining potato cultivations and other vegetable gardens in the English resorts. Now, the Public Works Department bungalow stands on the site of the prison.
Famous for its strawberries and Chikki, Mahabaleshwar also attracts many religious tourists. Mahabaleshwar is the source of five great rivers, the Krishna, Koyna, Savitri, Veena and Gayatri, which are considered holy. The Krishna and Mahabaleshwar Temples are added attractions to the devout.
Apart from religious sites, some other tourist attractions worth mentioning are the view points on the Sahyadri ranges. These view points offer panoramic views of the Western Ghats, with their thick forests and verdant green valleys. Springs and waterfalls abound in the region around Mahabaleshwar, making it even more picturesque. Many of these view points have good motorable roads. The winding rides through thick foliage are an enjoyable experience. If one really wants to enjoy nature in all its placid glory, it is a must for every visitor to take leisurely walks along these sylvan paths.
