Holidays in Panchgani

Panchgani is regarded as the sister hill station to Mahabaleshwar. The name is derived from the fact that it is located at the center of five hills ("Panch" = five, "Gani" = hills). 19 Km away from Mahabaleshwar and 1334 meters above sea level, Panchgani is lesser known than the latter; nevertheless it is quite a splendid little town. Nestled in an idyllic mountain retreat in the Krishna Valley, the Krishna River meanders through the farms, ravines and hamlets. Mirroring Mahabaleshwar, Panchgani too has its share of old British architecture.

The boarding schools in Panchgani have given the town a cosmopolitan character. It is famous today for its berry farms and orchards. The water of Dhom Dam keeps farms and rice fields irrigated all the year round. It is also a beautiful boating spot, where one can enjoy with scooter boats and speedboats.

The Table Land, which is one of the favorite and popular getaways from Panchgani, offers a panoramic view of Panchgani. It is an ebullient stretch of land, from where one can see every nook and corner of Panchgani. Devil's Kitchen, situated to the south of Tableland, is also a place of mythological interest. Legend has it that the Pandavas stayed here for a while and used this place to cook their food.
