Perched on a hill overlooking the lovely Himalayan sunrise, as well as the estate's thriving tea fields, the Glenburn Estate produces some of the world's finest leaves. Founded by a Scottish company in 1860, the expansive estate was lovingly restored and is now run as a grand retreat.
Glenburn opened its doors to tourists few years ago and is an exclusive boutique hotel where guests can stay at the Burra Bungalow, or the Glenburn Lodge on the banks of the River Rungit. At Rs 8,000-10,000 per person per night, it is extremely high-end, with as much as 80 per cent of the clientele comprising of foreigners.
The Planter's Suite, with a fireplace and historic East India company maps, looks across to the erstwhile kingdom of Sikkim. Guests stay in suites furnished with embroidered linen and Darjeeling Green Tea toiletries in the bathrooms. All rooms offer panoramic views of the mountain and valley. The Planters' Suite also boasts of a regal four-poster Spanish mahogany bed.
Other accommodation options are the Rose Suite, which was created as an ode to the purity and ageless beauty of the rose. The unusual silhouette of this suite gives an adjoining chamber complete privacy. The rose theme is beautifully incorporated in all facets of the room.
