Tea Estates in Assam

Tea Estates in AssamTo the far North east of India is the state of Assam, the land of the one horned Rhino and the land through which the mighty river, the Brahmaputra runs its majestic course.

On both sides of the river, lie the rolling plains of one of the world's largest tea growing areas with the highest per acre yield. Impeccably pruned tea bushes cover 2,16,200 hectares growing more than 360 million kg. of tea annually.

Assam is the birthplace of Indian tea. More than 165 years ago, in 1823, Robert Bruce discovered the plant growing in the wild region. In 1839, the first 8 chests of Indian tea that found their way to the London auctions came from Assam. It is then not surprising that there are more than 100 tea estates in Assam.

The cropping season begins as early as March and extends almost to mid-December. The plucking of the first flush goes on for two to two and a half months. June marks the eagerly awaited second flush teas. Monsoon is experienced in July to September. About 75% of Assam tea is produced during this season.

Prominent tea estates in Assam are Williamson Tea Estates and the estates of the Tata Group of Companies. Other significant tea estates in Assam are Ambika, Gogaidubi, Jamirah, Amguri, Ginjia, Mahal, Ananda, Haloating, Talap and many more.

The Assam tea offers a rich, full-bodied, bright beverage. For those who like their cuppas strong, Assam tea is the answer.
