Back in 640 AD, Hiuen Tsang, a Buddhist Chinese traveler, visited Vadnagar and also mentioned this place in his travelogue. After years when this place was excavated in 2008-2009, ruins of a Buddhist monastery were found. It had two stupas and an open courtyard around which nine cells were built. Thus, this place is also a major center for Buddhism.

  • Kirti Toran

Torans are a pair of 12th-century intricately-carved columns supporting an arch. They are about 40 feet tall and built in red and yellow sandstone. Kirti Toran is famous for torans, which stands on the bank of Sharmistha Talav. These torans are the few surviving gems of the entrance gates, which were once the highlight of Gujarat’s architecture in the Solanki period. Their caving style is like the Rudra Mahalaya in Sidhpur. Kirti Toran is embellished with carvings of war and hunting scenes. 

  • Taranga (Hill) Jain Temple

Dating back to the 12th century AD, Taranga Jain Temple is a fine example of exquisite architecture. Also called Ajinath Temple, it has about 700 steps to climb to get here. Many smaller temples are set along the path, dedicated to Buddhist goddesses. Once you arrive at the temple, there is a sight of a seven-domed temple, which houses a 5-meter-tall sculpture of the second Jain Tirthankar,  Shri Ajitnath. You may also witness the footprints of Rishabhanatha (the first Tirthankara) on the right side and the footprints of 20 Tirthankaras on the left side of the temple.

  • Modhera Sun Temple

About 25 km from Mehsana stands Modhera Sun Temple. It is dedicated to the sun gods of former days when the natural elements - fire, air-, earth, water, and sky - were revered with myriad manifestations of Vedic Gods. The temple is near River Pushpavati and is surrounded by terra-formed gardens of flowering trees and songs of birds. A walk around the Sun Temple will make you feel positive and bring you closer to nature. In October 2022, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a solar-powered 3-D Projection Mapping Show and Heritage Lighting at Modhera Sun Temple.
