Background of Thang Yug Gompa

Thang Yug Gompa is a 14th-century monastery in Kaza. It belongs to Buddhism's Sa Kya Pa sect. A group of eminent scholars and monks who revised the sacred Tangyur texts formed the Sa Kya Pa order. The Tangyur are Buddhist scriptures comprising 87 volumes and are integral to Buddhism. This monastery has become a popular destination for Tibetan scholars worldwide and in India. The Thang Yug Monastery was first built at Hikkim village. After it was severely damaged due to an earthquake in 1975, the villagers shifted it to its present location near Comic town. Many tourists still visit the ruins of the earlier site as well.

How to reach Thang Yug Gompa

There are two ways of reaching this monastery. First, you can reach Kaza town via Rohtang Pass from Manali. This route remains open from July to October. The second route is from Shimla via the Kinnaur district. This route remains accessible from May to October. The comic village, the present site for the Thang Yug Gompa, is around 6 km from Kaza town, and there are regular bus services to the monastery.

Over the years, the towns of Kaza and Keylong have emerged as hubs of Tibetan monasteries. The small hamlets around the area are stunningly beautiful. Kibber is a scenic village in the Spiti Valley and lies 18 km from Kaza town. It is situated at an elevation of 4270 meters above sea level. The houses here are made of stone instead of brick and mud, which is typical of Spiti Valley. You can visit the famous Kibber Monastery named after Serkong Rinpoche of Tabo.
