History:

The Kandariya Mahadev Temple in Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh in India dates back to the 11th century. The Kandariya Mahadev Temple at Khajuraho was built during the reigns of Vijaipal and Vidyadhara. This temple represents the central Indian building-style and the most magnificent creations of Indian architecture.

Description:

The main chamber of the Kandariya Mahadev temple in Khajuraho enshrines a lingam, which is a phallic representation of Lord Shiva. The entrance, the ceilings and pillars of the temple are noteworthy because of the beautiful sculptures that are depicted on them. Unlike other temples, the sculptures on this temple are tall and slender. The main shrine of the temple has beautifully carvings which depicts various Hindu gods and goddesses. In the Kandariya Mahadev templethere are six interior compartments which comprises of the portico, entrance hall, main hall, main chamber, transept and ambulatory. The temple is 102 feet long, 67 feet wide, with a tower 118 feet high. The platform on which the temple stands projects on the rear side and also laterally. There are a large number of sculptures on the three bands of the wall. The sculptures represent an array of gods and goddesses, couples and nymphs. There are also mythical lions carved in equal recesses. The platform of the temple is also decorated with figures of women in a various poses. The sculptures depicts women playing with a ball, engaged in writing a letter, applying make-up and engaged in various other activities.
