Sri Ranganathaswami Temple Trichy

The Sri Ranganathaswami Temple Trichy is a Hindu Temple in Tamil Nadu that has been dedicated to Lord Ranganatha who is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu on earth. So, for the devotees of Lord Vishnu this is a noble place for offering homage.

The Sri Ranganathaswami Temple occupies an area of about 156 hectares and so it is the largest temple in India. The Sri Ranganathaswami Temple is the biggest operating Hindu Temple on earth. There had been another temple, named Angkor Wat which was the largest but due to some war it was ravished. So, no Pujas are now performed there.

Therefore according to the survey the Sri Ranganathaswami Temple, Trichy is the largest performing Hindu Temple in India. Sriranga Mahathmiyam which is the spiritual and traditional congregation of the temple; according to it the Lord Brahma was once in a deep stupor.

In his trance Lord Brahma visualized the idol of Lord Vishnu being incarnated on this earth. This idol was known as Ranga Vimana. Brahma was also told that there would be seven other appearances of Lord Vishnu on earth.

These appearances would be Srirangam, Srimushnam, Venkatadri, Saliqram, Naiminsaranya, Totadri, Pushkara and Badri. This idol was then transferred by Lord Brahma to Viraja, Vaiswatha Manu, Ishwaku and then this idol finally was handled over to Sri Ram who was considered to be the incarnation of Lord Vishnu on this earth.

But after the demise of Ravana the idol was needed to be transferred to the next king and since it was Bibhisana, who was an Asura inspite of being an ardent follower of Sri Ram, scope for him being the inheritor of the idol was nominal. So, Lord Vinayaka posed as a little boy and while Bibhisana was on his way to his kingdom in Lanka, he stole the idol.

At that time Bibhisana was taking a bath in the water of Trichy and shouted after the little boy. He also hit the boy with stone and the Lord finally revealed his true identity. Bibhisana got blessings from the Lord and so, from that time onwards the temple was finally set up at Trichy and came to be called the Sri Ranganathaswami Temple.
