History of Udaigiri and Khandgiri Caves Bhubaneswar
Udaigiri and Khandgiri Caves are coarse grained sandstone caves that were modeled by the illustrious Jain king Kharavela whose period of reign extended from 168 to 153 B.C. These caves served as the dwelling places of the Jain monks who believed in leading an existence stripped off all worldly and material comforts. The steep compartments of the caves with low rise roofs are a pointer to the painstakingly simple life led by these monks.

Description of Udaigiri and Khandgiri Caves Bhubaneswar
The Udaigiri caves are located in a pretty congested area. At the foothill, to the right is the Queen's palace, locally known as the Rani ka Naur. The two storey structure has eight entrance points in all and the exquisitely sculpted pillars coupled with the embellished arches are bound to leave one spellbound. Rani Ka Naur is topped by Ganesh Gumpha -10. The Gumpha owes its name to the elephant headed Ganesha that graces the rear wall of the cell. The Pavana Gumpha and Sarpa Gumpha, known as the Cave of Purification and Serpeant Cave, respectively also warrant a special visit.

On the right to Cave 17, is the Ananta Caves that is known for carved figurines of women, elephant and snake that adorn the entrance. Cave 1 is also referred to as the Parrot Cave. The name itself is suggestive of the fact that the cave is embellished with the carvings of the birds. The Khandagiri Hills provide a vantage point from where one gets to enjoy enrapturing views of Bhubaneswar.
