The temple is one of the crowning glories of architectural marvel. It symbolizes the shape of a celestial chariot for taking Surya, the sun god, across the heavens. Seven majestic horses pull the chariot, with twelve wheels on either side. These represent the divisions of time. The seven horses are characterized by the number of days in a week, each wheel indicate an hour or a fortnight. The temple is illuminated in between 6 to 9 pm. History of Nine Planets' Shrine Konark
This 13th Century temple was pretty close to the sea when it was built, but as the sea has receded the temple got its present spot. The Sun Temple is also known as the Black Pagoda by the ancient sailors due to the dissimilarity in appearance of it from the white colored temples of Puri. Other places of interest include the Ramachandi temple which is dedicated to the Goddess Ramachandi, located at a distance of 8 km at a place where the river Kushabhadra meets with the sea. The Museum outside the temple has many sculptures and carvings those dating back to the time of the Sun temple's construction. The shrine of the nine planets of the Hindus are that of the Sun, the Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu (dragon's head), and Ketu (dragon's tail). The carved seated figure in the shrine symbolizes the Surya or Sun.
