Bundi is home to medieval forts, majestic palaces, marvelously carved Chhatris and numerous other impressive structures. Amazingly its splendor has not yet been completely explored; it is in fact overshadowed by several of the other fascinating tourist destinations in Rajasthan. But it has a certain quaint charm that inevitably mesmerizes visitors. The Lakes and Gardens in Bundi also comprise some of the spots that are well worth a visit when in Bundi.
When speaking of the Lakes and Gardens in Bundi, it is certainly the Lakes in Bundi which are referred to all the more. Not only are they more in number, the few beautiful gardens that are seen here have also developed around the lake, as for instance, the terraced gardens surrounding the Jalit Sagar Lake.
The Jalit Sagar Lake enjoys a very enviable location. It is nestled in the midst of a very picturesque surrounding. For all weary individuals who are fed up of the hustle and bustle of city lives, this is a perfect retreat. Few moments of solitude enjoyed in its serene and tranquil ambience can really work wonders, rejuvenating the mind and soul. Several other added attractions are also there in close proximity to what is one of the most frequented of the Lakes and Gardens in Bundi. These include the Smriti Kunj, the Sukh Mahal Palace and the Shikar Burj.
Yet another of the famous lakes in Bundi is the artificial lake Nawal Sagar. It is near to the historic Bundi Fort; in fact the reflection of the fort as well as of other parts of the city of Bundi falls in its serene waters and attracts tourists. A temple dedicated to Varuna, the God of water is located in the center of the lake and even though the temple remains half submerged in water, it is visited by devotees.
Bundi is popularly referred to as the City of Step Wells because of the presence of the large number of step wells in the city. Even though most of them have succumbed to the test of times, there are some which have been well preserved to this day and foremost amongst them is the Raniji ki Baori. The baori is without water for a major part of the year but it is well worth a visit because of its pillars and arches. The carvings are nothing short of exquisite and are sure to impress any onlooker.
