Tour to Ramgarh

A Tour to Ramgarh promises to be a very fascinating experience. Visitors are sure to be enamored by its old world charm. The magnificent havelis or mansions, the exquisite chattris and the beautiful temples constitute some of the greatest tourist attractions in Ramgarh. Ensure that you do not miss out on a visit to any of them when on a Tour to Ramgarh.

"Ramgarh is singularly striking and seems to give reality to a vision drawn from eastern romance. The buildings are all constructed from kunkur [gravel] grey hardpan, numerous handsome houses of the seths [businessmen] some of which are on a magnificent scale, ornamented and painted in various devices outwardly; the neat high wall and gateways and the cupola chattris [cenotaphs] in the suburb in contrast with the desert around, altogether exhibit a scene deserving to be allied with enchantment." - So said an English traveler in the 1830's. More than a century has passed after these comments were made by him. It is true that much has changed in Ramgarh, yet it retains much of that quintessential aura which appealed so immensely to him.

Ramgarh was founded by the Poddars. They were flourishing wool merchants of Churu. It so happened that the chieftain of Churu imposed a levy on the wool trade when the state funds started depleting. This was thought of by the Poddars to be an extremely unfair move. Extremely aggravated they decided to move out of the place and assisted by the Raja of Sikar founded Ramgarh in 1791. They were determined to make Ramgarh even more beautiful than Churu. As to how far they were successful in doing so can be well assessed even by you on your Tour to Ramgarh.

Ramgarh is indeed a very interesting place to visit. What will perhaps impress you the most on your Tour to Ramgarh is the Ram Gopal Poddar Chattri. There are many chattris in the state of Rajasthan but this one is a class apart from the rest simply because of its opulence and elaborateness. There are as many as 500 murals on it and the ones on top of the dome are the most remarkable. Depicting scenes from the Ramayana, the life of Krishna and the ragamala or the musical notes, these murals are exquisitely beautiful. The Ramayana Chattri is not this ostentatious but it also boasts of beautiful murals in maroon and blue depicting scenes from the Ramayana.

The royal havelis are also a must visit on your Tour to Ramgarh. They are truly very fine edifices that any onlooker will surely marvel at. The Bashashwarlal Poddar Haveli is well known for its floral designs painted in ochre color. Some of the other splendid structures are the Anant Ram Poddar Double Haveli, Jagannath Poddar Double Haveli and the Havelis belonging to the Ruias.

Of all the temples that Ramgarh is home to, the Ganga Temple is the best. Even though it has lost much of its former beauty, the murals on the outer walls of the temple impress visitors to this day. The murals and the beautiful mirror work within the interiors of the Shani Temple are also very admirable. The Hanuman Temple referred to by the locals as the Lal Kuan Mandir is in a dilapidated state but when on a Tour to Ramgarh, one cannot afford to miss out on the fine murals on the vaulted ceiling in front of the shrine.

Some of the other structures that can be included as a part of your sight seeing trip in Ramgarh are the Nawar Niketan, the Surekha Dharamshala and the Ram Lakshman Temple. Ramgarh being just 50 km from Bundi, it is a good place to visit particularly for those who are planning for Excursions from Bundi. There is no doubt that the visit will remain vividly in your minds for days to come.

And do make sure to pick up a few specimens of exquisite Rajasthani wood work on your Tour to Ramgarh. It is the best place to shop for them.
