The history of Chittorgarh is one of tenacity and valor. Located on the Southern part of Rajasthan on the banks of the Gambheri River, this erstwhile town attracts leisure travelers and historians in hordes. This ancient town was the reigning seat of the Sisodian clan of Rajputs from the 8th to the 13th century. However in the history of Rajasthan mention of it could be found even in the 7th century. There are many Tourist attractions in Chittorgarh all of which has a significance and history. The most frequented place in Chittorgah is the Chittorgarh fort situated atop a cliff. This derelict fort bears testimony to the many battles fought here and the atrocities of the Muslim rulers who waged war time and again to acquire this prosperous town of yore. The Temples in Chittorgarh were built by these Rajput warriors and chieftains who were strong supporters of Hinduism and patronized it in all forms.
Temples in Chittorgarh were built in the Indo Aryan style and bear the hallmark of the Rajputs. The grand style of the temples bears a testimony of the artistic skill of these craftsmen of Rajasthan. The Rajputs were follower of the Sun God and therefore many of the temples are dedicated to Surya. Their clan is also called Surya Vanshi in keeping with their affinity to the sun god. For instance Kalika Mata Temple, Chittorgarh was constructed in the 8th century and dedicated to the Sun God. But later the in the 14th century it was converted to a Kali temple. Meera Temple, Chittorgarh is dedicated to Meera Bai, the Rajput princess who was an ardent devotee of Krishna. It is said that she was saved from poisoning because Krishna drank the poison herself as a resultant effect his whole body turned blue. It was built during the reign of Rana Kumbha who patronized the building of Hindu temples. Kumbha Shyam Temple, Chittorgarh or Temple of Varah is situated in the same compound as the Meera temple though it is bigger in size.
Most of these temples were seiged during the times of Rana Pratap by Alauddin Khilji and again by Akbar at the end of 16th century.
