Taking a tour to the Salim Singh Ki Haveli will set you wondering about the skilled acumen of the artisan of yester years. Words fail when you stand gazing at this 300-year-old magnificent piece of architecture. This wondrous piece of excellent work of art stands testimony to the glorious past of Jaisalmer.
The beautiful haveli, surmounted with a blue cupola roof is studded with intricately done stone carvings, latticed windows and splendid murals. Resembling a palace out of the Arabian Nights, Salim Singh Ki Haveli was built by Salim Singh when he was the prime minister of Jaisalmer.
The bracketed walls and the chiseled window screens indicate the sheer love for details among the artisans of Jaisalmer. The huge rooms, ornamented frescoes and the extensively done corridors emanate an air of opulence.
According to history the haveli was said to have an additional couple of storeys over the existing five-tiered structure but orders from the king led to the demolishment of the two storeys as the haveli in its full structure was of about the same height to the royal palace. Salim Singh, a shrewd but able prime minister who had aspirations for the throne was said to have been later murdered for his growing ambitions.
