Introduction to Dilwara Temple:
Considered as masterpieces of Indian Architecture, the Dilwara Temple in Mount Abu is visited by thousands across the globe, apart from the Jain pilgrims. It is an epitome of Indian Architecture that has stood the tough test of time. The temple is a unique creation and is an important Jain Pilgrim Center. Lord Krishna’s life has been imprinted on the walls of this cave temple. The Dilwara Jain Temple is located at a distance of just 2 ˝ kilometers from Mount Abu.
History of Dilwara Temple, Mount Abu:
The history of Dilwara Jain Temple dates back to the ancient times. It was constructed in the period between 11th to the 13th Century AD. You can see beautiful marble works at the Dilwara Temple. There are five legendary temples at Dilwara. They are all the sacred to the Jain pilgrims as well as the other tourists as well. It is said that others come here to witness its architectural brilliance.
Description of Dilwara Temple:
There are 5 temples in all, each with its own unique identity though together they are named after the small village in which they are located. These are:
Vimal Vasahi (Shri Adi Nathji temple) :- This temple was built in 1021 AD by Vimal Shah. It is dedicated to the first Jain Tirthankara named Adi Nath. There are numerous smaller idols of the Jain Tirthankaras over here. A collection of nine rectangular designs called Navchowki is of great importance over here. The ceiling has engraved designs.
Luna Vasahi (Shri Nemi Nathji temple) :- This temple is dedicated to the 22nd Tirthankara Shri Nemi Nathji. Erected in 230 AD by two brothers - Vastupal and Tejpal, the temple was dedicated to their dead brother Luna.
Pithalhar (Shri Rishabh Deoji temple) :- A colossal metal statue of Rishab Dev (Adinath) stands to the amazement of the devotees. The metal is composed of five different elements but the principal metal used here is pital or brass. The temple consists of Garbhagraha, Gudh mandap and Navchowki.
Khartar Vasahi (Shri Parshav Nathji temple) :- this temple has been dedicated to Lord Parshavnath and was constructed by Mandlik and his family in 1458-59 A.D. the three storied building over here is the highest among the shrines in Dilwara.
Mahaveer Swami (Shri Mahaveer Swamiji temple) :- It is a small structure that was constructed in 1582 A.D. in honor of the 24th Jain Tirthankara, Lord Mahaveer.
