History of Eklingji Temple Udaipur:
According to legends, the Eklingji Temple was established by one of the contemporaries of Adi Sankaracharya called Acharya Viswaroopa and is also closely connected to the Sharada Math at Dwaraka, which was founded by Adi Sankaracharya. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the Eklingji Temple in Udaipur commanded immense respect among the people of Mewar that Lord Shiva was said to be the actual ruler of the kingdom of Mewar and it is thus said that the Royal Family of Mewar only acted as regents to His royal wishes and considered themselves to be the rulers only in name. Rebuilt during the 15th century A.D., after it was destroyed, the Temple of Eklingji Temple in Udaipur is today one of the most important tourist attractions of Rajasthan.

Description of Eklingji Temple:
Resembling the architectural magnificence of the Jain Temples of Gujarat, the ancient temple of Eklingji Temple in Udaipur is one of the most revered temples in India. The main deity of the temple is Lord Shiva, who is depicted here as a four faced Black marble image. It is said that the four faces of the Lord here represents the four faces of Brahma (facing west), Vishnu (facing north), Maheshwar (facing south) and Surya (facing east). Shiva here is thus worshiped as Parambrahma, which means the “wholesome One”. The Temple which also houses deities like Parvati, Ganesh, Ganga, Kartikeya, Yamuna and Saraswathi is also known for the other temples which dot its complex. These also include the Nathon ki Mandir, which was established as early as the 10th century, though no worship is offered at the site. The main festival at the Eklingji Temple, Udaipur is the Festival of Shivaratri, when the entirety of the temple premises is spring cleaned and decorated with lights as well as flowers. The images of Lord Shiva as well as those of the other deities of the temple are also decked up with jewelry as well as flowers.

The complex of the temple is fully capable of supplying the temple with Holy water required for the daily rituals of the temple, the deities as well as the priests of the temple. The temple houses two tanks, which are known as Karz Kund and Tulsi Kund, which are located on the northern sides of the temple.
