The chief attraction of the Memorial lies in the life-like bronze statue of Maharana Pratap who is seated on Chetak, his faithful and favorite horse.

History: In order to know about Maharana Pratap Memorial it is worthwhile that you have an idea about one of the famous historical figures of ancient India, Maharana Pratap.

Maharana Pratap, son of Maharana Udai Singh II, was the ruler of Mewar. In about 1570, Rana Pratap (as he is also known) succeeded to the throne, and thus marked the era of Rajput ascendancy and their rivalry with the Mighty Mughal Emperor, Akbar. Though the Rajputs were defeated on their encounter, with the Mughals, the former were undeniably one of the fiercest opponents that the latter had ever faced in their long rule in India.

Maharana Pratap, who spent a major part of his life in jungles, was always accompanied by his horse, which he had named “Chetak”. The horse was loyal to his master and carried him in every battlefield and stood by his master till he breathed his last.

Description: Maharana Pratap Memorial is gigantic monument, located at the top of the Moti Magri (which in Hindi means “Pearl Mount”) and is situated on the banks of the Fateh Sagar. The statue of Maharana Pratap seated on his favorite horse, Chetak, is made of bronze, which is an alloy of copper and zinc.

Local residents climb the hill and pay their reverence to Rana Pratap and his faithful charger, Chetak, who was finally killed in the battle of Haldighati, between the Rajputs and Mughals in the year 1576.

In the vicinity of Maharana Pratap Memorial, one may also find the ruins of one of the earliest forts of Udaipur and also a delightful Japanese Rock Garden.

Thus, the Maharana Pratap Memorial, along with other Monuments and Havelis in Udaipur attract tourists from all over the world who come in large numbers, every year, to re-live the glorious past.
