Around 48 kms away from the city of Udaipur, you will come across a beautiful temple called Nathdwara Temple. It is essentially a Vaishnavite temple. It was constructed in the 17th century. People believe that the idol of Lord Krishna was moved to the town of Nathdwara from Vrindaban to save it from the attacks of Aurangzeb, the Mughal ruler. When it was being transferred, vehicle's wheel got stuck in mud. The escorting priest assumed that the Lord wants his temple to be at this spot and so it was built here.
Architecture of Nathdwara Temple
As per the architectural design of the Nathdwara Temple in Udaipur is concerned, you will find this structure very simple. But, its simplicity is the main attraction. You must see the image of Lord Krishna or Shrinathji here. The image depicts Lord Krishna with the Govardhana Pahad (a hill) on his little finger. The Lord Krishna's figure is built of a big black stone. You can notice one snake, one lion, two cows and two peacocks carved by the side of the God's head. There is a parrot also in the image.
Main Attraction at Nathdwara Temple
You should visit Nathdwara Temple during the festival of Janamashtmi. Janamashtmi is the celebrations of the birth of Lord Krishna. Tourists and pilgrims from different parts of the world come here especially to witness this event. On this day, the image of the Lord Krishna is bathed and adorned with beautiful attires. Meals are offered at regular intervals.
