The Protestant Dutch captured Cochin in 1663 and restored the church in 1779. After the occupation of Kochi by the British in 1975, it became an Anglican Church.
Vasco de Gama : The first European to reach India by sailing around Africa, died in Cochin in 1524 and was buried here for 14 years before his remains were transferred to Lisbon in Portugal, His tombstone can be seen inside the church.

In reality the coasting is one long, palm – fringed delight, the powdery sands – usually silver, occasionally dusted golden – only interrupted from time to time by inlets, estuaries or headlands. Whether secluded and peaceful or broad and lively, they exist for all to enjoy and for none are private. Overnight to be spent at hotel.
Day 12 : Goa
Today you shall visit the Churches in Goa.
Goa : The Portuguese arrived in Goa in 1510 under the command of Alfonso de Albuquerque. They had unsuccessfully tried to establish a base further South, but were opposed by the Zamorin of Calicut and faced stiff competition from the Turks, who controlled the trade routes across the Indian Ocean at the times.
Blessed as it is by natural harbors and wide rivers, Goa was the ideal base for the seafaring Portuguese, who were intent on controlling the spice route from the East. They were also possessed with the strong desire to spread Christianity. Jesus missionaries led by St. Francis Xavier arrived in 1542. For a while Portuguese control was limited to a small area around Old Goa, but by the middle of the 16th century it has expanded to include the provinces of Border and Salcete Despite more than three decades of “Liberalization” from Portuguese colonial rule, roman Catholicism remains a major religion in Goa.
A host of churches still cluster on Holy Hill including the restored Royal Chapel of St. Anthony and the convent of St. Monica, but Goa velha’s two great set-pieces are the Basilica de Bom Jesus and the Se Cathedral. The first is a world Heritage site, presenting a splendidly adorned facade although inside all is restrained except for the ornate marble and jasper tomb of St. Francis Xavier.
Sixty years in building, the Se Cathedral is the largest church in Goa and – it is said the largest Church in Goa and – it is said the largest in all Asia. It’s single tower (the other collapsed in 1776) houses the great 17th century Golden bell and offers superb views from the topmost story.
