Kumbh Mela is the holiest congregation of Hindus. Devotees gather to attain salvation with bathing in the holy river waters. The largest gathering in the world happens every 12 years for Purna Kumbha and every 6 years for Ardh Kumbha. The pious festival is celebrated at four places in India: Nashik (on the banks of River Godavari), Ujjain (on the banks of River Kshipra), Haridwar (on the banks of River Ganga) and Allahabad (on the banks of Sangam; confluence of Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati).
The next Mahakumbh is in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh. The holy gathering happens when Jupiter ascends into sun sign Leo’s quarter and is called ‘Simhastha Kumbh Mahaparv’. The ritual of bathing in the holy waters of Kshipra begins on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Chaitra (March-April) and continues on various dates until the full moon in the following month of Vaishakha.
