Perhaps what most Indians readily associate with the state of Assam is Tea. Rich, strong, aromatic, energy giving, tasting better with generous portions of milk and sugar -quintessential Assamese Tea is about all this and more. This Tea Fair in Guwahati is a result of the joint initiative taken by the Tea Board, the Indian Tea Association and the Indian Trade Promotion Organization. This kind of a fair was not held earlier in this state. Though it is the first one, expectations from it are immense. The Tea Fair in Guwahati is believed to be a platform which would give Assam a wonderful scope to promote its tea not only within the borders of the country but world wide.
As many as 400 foreign delegates from different countries like Iran, Kenya, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, UK, Russia and Egypt will be participating in this India International Tea Festival. The primary aim will be to lure these foreign buyers to purchase Assamese Tea. Of late, the Dubai Tea Festival has gained immense popularity and attracted these foreign buyers. The Tea Fair in Guwahati intends to divert them towards themselves and thereby establish Assam as one of the primary tea hubs in the whole world.
While the Tea Fair would be held in Guwahati, simultaneously another small event would also be celebrated at the Toklai Tea Research Center in Jorhat which incidentally is the oldest tea research center in the world.
Tea has indeed given Assam a distinctive place in the world map and we can only hope and pray that such endeavors emerge as a phenomenal success and go on to become one of the most important Trade Shows in Assam highlighting what is Assam's most precious product. In this context it can be mentioned that an attempt is also being taken to grant Geographical Indication to Assam Orthodox Tea. If successful, this will enable better promoting of this prime event.
