Part of the Shimla district, Rampur town is a prominent weekend getaway from Shimla just 130 km away . This place is a major stop over for tourists visiting Narkanda via Shimla. Also known as Bashahr, this place was once the largest among Shimla's hill states. The Buddhist dominated Spiti valley lies in the northern part of Rampur making it an important gateway for tourists and Buddhist pilgrims. In the southern part of Rampur is Garhwal. Situated to the left of Sutlej River, Rampur was popular as the winter capital and has an elevation of 1350 meters above sea level.

Jubbarhatti Airport in Shimla is the closest air base to Rampur. This airport is around 22 km from main Shimla city.

About Rampur

Rampur was also an early trading route between Central Asia and the Tibetan border and mercantile activity remained the prime focus. The Lavi Fair held in November brought in crowds of traders and tourists who purchased clothes and fabrics at a cheaper rate. People also consider Rampur as a stop over point before heading to Lake Mansarovar and Kailash peaks.

Lavi Fair - Considered the largest fair in northern India that is held annually in mid-November, Lavi Fair draws craftsmen, traders and textile owners from all over the country. It forms the largest market for selling of handicraft items, Rampuri Chaddar (blanket or shawl) and other durable products. It is a lovely time for shopaholics.

Nathpa Jhakri Dam - This dam is situated on the Sutlej River and is close to the town of Rampur. It is used for generation of hydroelectricity and power production. The area around this dam is scenic and ideal for nature walks and photography.

Shimla - The capital city of Himachal is around 135 km from Rampur. It is a major hill station and home to the Kalka-Shimla railway line that is a World Heritage Site. Shimla Mall and Ridge are two places of tourist interest here. You can shop at the famous Lakkar Bazaar of Shimla, stay at world class resorts and have a memorable honeymoon here.

Narkanda - Situated at a height of 2708 meters above sea level, Narkanda is another tourist destination in Shimla district that lies close to Rampur. It is also located on the Hindustan-Tibet Road and is bounded by the Shivalik Hills. World tourists acclaim Narkanda as a ski resort and favorite of honeymoon couples in winter.
