One of the important cities in Bundelkhand region is Jhansi. Famous for its rich history, culture and heritage, Jhansi attracts tourists from all over. The name of the city is synonymous with Rani Lakshmi Bai who fought against the British troops.
The beautiful monuments and forts in Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh reminds one of the grandeur and splendor of the bygone era. Once the stronghold of the Chandelas it was later ruled by the Newalkars and then Gangadhar Rao gained accession to the throne. The wife of Gangadhar Rao was Lakshmi Bai. Since there was no male heir to the throne the British tried to capture Jhansi but it was the sheer courage and valor of Lakshmi Bai that stood against the English East India Company. Along with Nana Sahib and Tantya Tope, Jhansi ki Rani led the revolutionaries of the 1857 revolt.
