Introduction
Surrounded by a thousand legends, Nanda Devi is truly one of the most revered shrines of Uttaranchal. Enveloped by the snowy peaks of the majestic Himalayas, Nanda Devi is seen to be the principle deity or “Isht Devata” of the people of Uttaranchal. Famous as the daughter of the king of mountains, Himavat, Nanda Devi or Gaura as she is also known is married to an ash-smeared Yogi or sage and returns to her maternal home during the Krishna Paksha of Bhado or on the 2nd week of August. This legend marks one of the most important festivals in Uttaranchal, the Nanda Devi fair, which is perhaps the best time to pay a visit to Uttaranchal. The entire valley reverberates with the sounds of mystic chants and folk songs which sing praises of the beauty and graciousness of the deity.
