The Corbett National Park had been the erstwhile hunting preserve of the Maharaja of Rewa, and a natural home to the elegant white tigers. The encroachments of the white tigers created an ecological imbalance with the slow diminishing of cattle and human population. Subsequently, man started killing this wild beast. With progressing time, this animal began to be the chief interest of hunters, thereby depleting their numbers, alarmingly. Afterwards the Government felt it necessary to preserve these wild animals from poachers and allotted space for their natural subsistence.

The Corbett National Park is one amongst them. This National Park is named after the famous hunter, Jim Corbett, who visited the place during his hunting expeditions. his famous book, Temple Tiger speaks of his confrontation with a man eating leopard, which he finally killed. Said to cause a lot of nuisance amongst the villagers, the Panar leopard and Champawat Tiger had killed 836 villagers! These fatal incidents came to an end with the advent of Jim Corbett, who managed to kill them.

Of the numerous wild animals found in Corbett National Park, mention may be made of the Himalayan Black Bears, Dholes, Jackals, Yellow Throated Martens, Himalayan Palm Civets, Indian Gray Mongooses and Porcupines. Elephants move about in this National Park with pride, while the fresh water has abundant smoothly swimming crocodiles. The birds of Corbett National Park are categorized into migrant species and natural inhabitants. The residents like Cormorants, Egrets, Herons, and Darters are especially famous. Reptiles like Crocodile, Gaharal, Turtles, Indian Python and King Cobra offer astonishing views of this Wild Life Sanctuary to the visitors.

Important Points about Corbett National Park in Uttaranchal:
The Corbett National Park was declared a Tiger Reserve in 1973 as renamed as Corbett National Park in 1957. The original name of this National Park was Hailey National Park. Project Tiger was set up here with the help of the World Wild Life Fund, attempting to revive the numbers of the diminishing tigers. Noticeable increase was attained henceforth, leading to the doors being opened for the tourists here.
