Covering an area of 957.969 square kilometers, Govind Wild Life Sanctuary houses many a rare species of birds and animals. Govind Wild Life Sanctuary in Uttaranchal was established in 1955, 1st March due to environmental reasons. The maximum temperature in this National Park ranges from 25oC and 5oC. It receives a maximum of 100-1500 mm of rainfall and the languages spoken by the people here are Garhwal, Hindi, and English etc.

Located in the greater part of the Tons River, Govind Wild Life Sanctuary in Uttaranchal is a popular tourist’s destination. Most importantly, it is the main watershed of Yamuna River and receives maximum precipitation all round the year. Rich forest surrounding the Govind Wild Life Sanctuary in Uttaranchal consists of exquisite varieties of trees, some rare and with mythological connection.


Legendary Association of Govind National Park in Uttaranchal:
It is said that the legendary character Hanuman, who traveled across the Palk Strait, came flying over Indian landmass until he finally reached Uttaranchal. From here he took the medicine for Sri Laxmana, brother of Sri Rama, who was affected by snake’s poison. The medicinal herbs of Uttaranchal thus possess life endowing capacities and are a new lease of life to the people.

Moreover some species such as Snow Leopard, residing in the zenith of the Mountains, which are endangered by constant interference from poachers threatened the ecological balance and therefore needed attention. Government declared this zone as National Park after scrutinizing this condition.

Flora and Fauna in Govind Wild Life Sanctuary:
There are 15 mammals and 150 species of birds found in Govind Wild Life Sanctuary in Uttaranchal. This includes the Common Leopard, Himalayan Thar, Bharal, Black Bear, Brown Bear, Musk Deer, Serow and Snow Leopard. There is a large variety of endangered birds found in Govind Wild Life Sanctuary.

This list includes the Golden Eagle, Monal Pheasant, Koklas Pheasant, Steppe Eagle and Western Tragopan, Bearded Vulture, Black Eagle and Himalayan Snow Cock. Some other varieties include the Minivets, Owls, Pigeons, Parakeets, Thrushes, Tits, Warblers, Buntings, Bulbuls, Cuckoos and Finches.
