Dum Bhindi is a well known Indian delicacy. A popular north Indian dish made by using Bhindi or Okra, it is easy to make and can be eaten with any type of Indian bread.

Speaking of Okra or Bhindi (in Hindi), it needs to be mentioned that it happens to be a favorite vegetable of the Indians. Also known as Lady’s Finger, this vegetable is green in color and is used for making different kinds of delicacies, either in combination with other vegetables or as a stand alone dish.

Bhindi is high in nutritional value. It is rich in vitamins and low in fat. In fact, it is also high in calcium which is good for women, especially older women. Okra is also considered good for the heart.

Okra is used extensively by both the north and south Indians. Available throughout the year, Okra is an easy to use and a non-hassle vegetable. Kurkuri Bhindi, Bhindi Ki Sabzi and Dahi Bhindi are some of the popular dishes made from Okra.

Another very popular dish that is worth trying out is Dum Bhindi. This Indian recipe is simple and delicious too. You can make this dish in your home too. In order to prepare Dum Bhindi, you need the following ingredients:

  • Lady’s Finger (Bhindi)     250 gms
  • Green Chilies (Chopped)              2 teaspoon
  • Red Chilies (pounded)   2 teaspoon
  • Ginger-Garlic paste )      4 teaspoon
  • Turmeric powder             1 teaspoon
  • Garam Masala powder  1 teaspoon
  • Curd      250 gms
  • Oil           100 ml
  • Ghee or butter 2 teaspoon
  • Lady’s Finger (Bhindi)     250 gms
  • Salt to taste       

Note: The quantity of ingredients for Dum Bhindi used will vary based on your taste.

  • Now that you know the ingredients, its time to start with the actual preparation. Just follow the steps mentioned below:
  • In a blender, mix the garam masala powder, pounded red chilies, curd, salt and half of the chopped green chilies.
  • Wash the Bhindi and trim them. Take a knife and make slits in the bhindi. This will help the vegetable to soak in the masala.
  • Now, marinate the bhindi in the curd mixture and set aside for approximately 20 minutes
  • Take a wok or a ‘kadai’ and heat the oil or ghee.
  • Once the oil is hot, add the rest of the chopped green chilies, ginger garlic paste and turmeric and fry well.
  • Now, add the bhindi and curd mixture and cook nicely for approximately 10 minutes.
  • After this, add ghee or butter and sprinkle garam masala powder on the bhindi. Cover the wok and cook for another 5 minutes on a low heat.
  • Now, remove the lid and toss, turn and cook well for 10 minutes till the mixture turns dry.
  • Remove from fire and serve hot, garnished with coriander leaves.

Note: Make sure you do not add water as the water from the curd will help in the cooking. Remember, that it should not be gravy.

You can serve this delicacy with hot tandoori rotis, parathas or naan. High in nutrition and delicious too, it will make you lick your fingers.
