The paintings depict the story of Buddhism and the Jatakas. Various stories related to the Jataka tales are interpreted in the form of beautiful paintings. The paintings were made with herbal colors which make them very attractive to look at and also environment friendly. The caves also consist of some statutes and sculptures of Lord Buddha in various poses. The sculptures were made with simple tools like hammers and chisels.

The Ajanta caves can be easily reached from various parts of the country. The nearest airport is located in the city of Aurangabad. Regular buses, cars and autos ply between Aurangabad and the caves. Aurangabad is also connected by well developed railways and roadways with various parts of the country.
