Introduction

Fatehpur ranks among the World Heritage Sites and is one of the best specimens of Mughal architecture. It is located at an easy distance from the city of Agra in Uttar Pradesh and is one of the finest specimens of the rich historical culture of medieval Mughal India.

It was Emperor Akbar who made Fatehpur Sikri as his political capital from the period between 1571 and 1585. Agra was later made the capital of the Mughal Empire. Fatehpur Sikri is home to a number of majestic buildings and monuments. It consists of a magnificent fort which is a blend of Mughal and Persian architecture. The ideal time for coming to Fatehpur Sikri is between the months of November and February. The weather is this part of the year is perfect for holidaying.

One can easily reach Fatehpur as it is well accessible as it is well connected with other parts of the country. The nearest airport is located in the city of Agra. By roadways, Fatehpur Sikri is well linked with Delhi, Jaipur and other well known places.

Some of the major monuments in Fatehpur Sikri are:

  • Buland Darwaza: It is one of the most important monuments in the place. This grand gateway rises up to a height of 54 meters and is the largest gateway in the world. It was constructed in the year 1575 to celebrate Emperor Akbar's success in conquering Gujarat and is a fine mixture of Persian and Mughal architecture.
  • Diwan-i-Khas- Hall: Also called the "Ekstambha Prasada", the Diwan-i-Khas served as the royal chamber of Emperor Akbar. It is designed according to the Persian style of architecture and the interior is decorated with fine sculpture and precious stones. Tomb of Salim Chisti: The tomb of famous Sufi saint Salim Chisti is located here. The tomb is well known for its delicate carvings.
