Khajuraho is one of the well known heritage sites in India. It is located in the state of Madhya Pradesh and is known for the famous temples and religious monuments. Originally, there were around 80 temples in the Khajuraho, out of which only 22 still remain in some state of preservation. The temples are spread over an area of around 8 square miles.
The temples at Khajuraho resembled the blend of northern Indian shikhara temple style and western, eastern and southern schools of architecture. In addition to the Hindu temples, some temples are also dedicated to the Jain saints. Some of the temples are dedicated to the Hindu Gods like Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. The temples consist of exquisite architecture and carvings of various Goddesses, yakshas, fairies and dancers in various poses. Some of the renowned temples are the Panchayatana temple and the Devi Jagadambi Temple.
Another attraction of Khajuraho is the Khajuraho Dance Festival. This week long festival showcases various classical dances from various parts of India. The festival is held every year between the months of February and March. It takes place in an open air auditorium at the backdrop of the Chitragupta Temple. The festival highlights dance forms like Kathak, Bharathanatyam, Odissi, Kuchipudi, Manipuri and Kathakali.
