Popularly known as the Bahai Temple, the Lotus Temple derives its name as it is shaped like a half-opened lotus flower.
The Lotus Temple in Delhi is made with a blend of white marble, cement, dolomite and sand. The temple is open for people for all communities. The lotus flower of the temple signifies peace or purity and portrays the greatness of God. The temple consists of carvings, sculptures and paintings which represent the Bahai faith.
The serene environment of the temple makes it an ideal place for meditation. The architecture is a blend of both traditional and modern styles. The temple was designed by a renowned architect named Fariborz Sahba and it took around 10 years to complete the temple. A lovely pool surrounds the temple from all sides.
The Lotus Temple, Delhi consists of double curved surfaces. The shells were constructed with steel to prevent for rusting. The temple was inaugurated in the year 1986. The temple remains open between 9:00 am and 7:00 pm in the summer season and 9:30 am and 5:30 pm during the winter season. The temple remains closed on Mondays.
The Lotus Temple can be easily reached from various parts of the city and its surroundings. It takes around 30 minutes to drive from the main city center to the temples, Buses, cars and taxis are easily available.
