The Divine Badrinath …
Placed between Nar and Narayan mountain ranges, Badrinath in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand is naturally bestowed with pristine surroundings. One among the most sought after pilgrim centres in the Indian subcontinent, Badrinath is nicely set in the backdrop of the colossal Neelkanth mountain peak. The term Badrinath is a derivative of badri, which means the place where beries grow abundantly.
Built by the Garhwal kings, Lord Badrinarayan is the main idol here. Lord Vishnu, is seen armed with the legendary chakra, shankh and seated in the yogamudra (meditative) position. Adi Shankaracharya found this black stone image on the banks of the Alakananda River. It was moved to this temple in 16th century. The temple reflects the Buddhist vihara style of architecture and has a gilt roof, painted facades on the walls and three mandapas inside. Garbhagriha is the sacred sanctum, there is a darshan mandapa for devotes and a sabha mandapa or assembly hall.
A central institution established by Adi Shankaracharya, Jyotimath is close to Badrinath town. The math (house of worship and spirituality) forms an excellent base to trekkers visiting the Valley of Flowers National Park. Three other such institutions established by Shankaracharya are located in Dwarka, Puri and Shringeri. The Narasimha Temple near Jyotirmath is another Lord Vishnu shrine.
