If you are planning to visit a hill station in India this vacation, there can be no better choice than Kalimpong. Placed amidst the Shiwalik hills, it is a part of the district of Darjeeling. Situated at an altitude of about 1250 meters above sea level between the Durpin and the Deolo Hill, Kalimpong is known for its green meadows, undulating valleys, dense virgin forests, and the majestic Khangchendzonga as a magnificent backdrop! March to Mid-June and Mid September to December are the best season for the travelers to visit Kalimpong. It is recommended to take light woolen and tropical clothes with you if you are visiting in summer months. But for winter, make sure to take heavy woolen garments. Umbrellas and raincoats can be helpful as light drizzling may occur at any time.

Kalimpong is considered at the best ecological destination in India. It thrives in wide range of flora and fauna. Some of the most commonly found floras in Kalimpong are acacia, orchids, cinnamon, ficus, bamboo, cacti and cardamom. Evergreen alpine vegetation and pine trees are commonly found. Here, you can find seven different species of rhododendron and three hundred species of orchids. The hill sides are dotted with sunflower and poinsettia. There are four sixty nurseries that have blooming flowers of various types.

You can go for sightseeing tours in and around Kalimpong and make sure to visit the MacFarlane Church, Zong Dong Palri Fo Brang monastery, Durpin Dara, Kalimpong arts and crafts center, Pedong monastery, Deolo Hill, Mangal Dham Mandir, Central Sericulture and Flower Nurseries Swiss Dairy and many others.

The faunas, which are largely found in Kalimpong, are Red Panda, Asiatic black bear, Himalayan Black Bear, Himalayan Tahr, Siberian Weasel, barking deer, Clouded Leopard, goral, gaur and pangolin. Some of the major birds, which are found here, are Monal pheasant, hornbills, Eurasian Sparrowhawks, Black Baza, Besra, Himalayan Griffon Vulture, and the Kalij Pheasant.

Getting to Kalimpong is very easy. The nearest airport is the Bagdogra Airport, which facilitates the travelers. The nearest railhead is at New Jalpaiguri.
