The Rangdum monastery is an old Buddhist shrine and monastic home. It is located between Kargil and Padum in the northernmost part of India. Being perched on a hilltop, the monastery looks like a fort keeping an eye on the serene valley.

This Tibetan Buddhist monastery is one of the major tourist attractions in Ladakh, and it belongs to the Gelugpa sect. Legends have it that the sacred monastery was built during King Tsewang Mangyul of Ladakh, close to about 200 years ago. Although, some believe that its construction started a long time back in the 8th century.

The architecture of the Rangdum monastery in Ladakh boasts of a central prayer hall, which houses a marvelous collection of statues and art objects. Besides, the monastery’s highlights also include two tiny hamlets, Yuldo and Tashi-Tongze, which are surrounded by Chorten rows. As it is a monastic home, one can expect a lot of Buddhist monks to meditate on the premises.
