The Prithvi Theatre in Mumbai is the hub of theatrical excellence and experiments in Mumbai, famous for the Maratha Theatre. It is located at Janki Kutir, on Juhu Church Road, a by-lane near Juhu Beach. The Prithvi Theatre, a traveling theatre company, was established by the 1950s Bollywood screen icon Prithviraj Kapoor in 1944. The first theatre company in the country with a permanent crew and a mission to do good with the help of art, Prithvi Theatre set the trail for the present-day theatre concept.

Prithvi Theatre history

Although Shashi Kapoor constructed the theater’s permanent structure in 1978, Shri Prithviraj Kapoor, his father and the then-superstar of Bollywood, founded Prithvi Theatres in 1944 and began staging Hindustani plays there (Hindi and Urdu). When he started starring in plays, Prithviraj was rumoured to be at the height of his success as an actor in Hindi cinema. His vision for the theatre was to create a flourishing venue for Indian theatre.

After the demise of Prithviraj Kapoor in 1972, his son Shashi Kapoor and daughter-in-law Jennifer Kapoor established the Prithviraj Kapoor Memorial Trust and bought land in 1975. As a result, the 200-seat theatre as we see it today was inaugurated on November 5th, 1978. The Prithvi Theatre bent on providing theatre artists with a decent livelihood, is an important landmark for theatre enthusiasts and performers all over the country.
