St. Michael’s Church in Mumbai is one of the oldest standing churches. This Church is far and wide famous for its Novena services and Christmas Mass. It is among the oldest buildings dating back to the Portuguese rule era. To look at the picture, there was about a kilometer-long queue in front of the Church. As per the beliefs, if a devotee visits the Church for nine consecutive Wednesdays, his wishes get granted by the lord. The weekly Novena services of the Church were started in 1947 when Fr. Edward Placidus Fernandes noticed similar rituals in Europe and thought to bring that to India. Therefore, this is a great time to visit the Church and attend the mass prayer.
Why Visit
We can say that this Church led to the beginning of the Catholic legacy in Mumbai and India. Every day devotees gather and attend the daily sermons as it gets decorated with lights and garlands. However, some parts of this Catholic Church look deteriorated but have a charm. Glass paintings, wooden benches, arched structures, gateways, and images of Jesus and the Virgin Mary make it look even more beautiful.
History of St. Michael’s Church
This Church was originally built in 1534 by the Portuguese rulers. It has undergone many renovations since then, and the latest structure of the Church was built in 1973. However, the Church mainly came into the limelight in 2008 when the picture of Lord Jesus showed red spots believed to be blood. This event didn’t only attract Christians but followers of other religions from even neighboring states.
This Church was built by Antonio Porto, a builder of the Church, and conventionally served as a convent on the banks of Mandav. However, during British rule, the chapel was destroyed, and the famous picture of the Virgin Mary was recovered here, which is one of the most beautiful tourist attractions. This Church of Mumbai has witnessed many attacks and survived.
The architecture of St. Michael’s Church
This Church has faced many renovations, and its structure has been restored multiple times with the best possible efforts. However, due to the renovation, this Church has lost its antique structures. You can witness several images of Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary. Today, it is a Red-beige colored structure that attracts tourists throughout the year.
