During your visit to the capital of the country, a visit to the Gandhi Museum, New Delhi is a must part of your itinerary. The Museum, managed under the Gandhi Smarak Nidhi (Gandhi Memorial Trust), is located in Raj ghat, one of the most popular tourist attractions in New Delhi.

The Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya Samiti’ (GSSS; Gandhi Memorial Museum Society), was registered under the Societies Registration Act of 1860, vide Regn. No. S.2873 of 1965-66 on 26 November 1965. The museum is managed by a Registered Society (an NGO). It is run on the income from financial contributions/donations and governed by the Aims and Objectives of the GSSS.

The Gandhi Museum in New Delhi was a concept of the period prior to the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi on the evening of January 30, 1948. This Museum which was formerly located in Mumbai was shifted to Delhi in early 1951.

Timings of Gandhi Museum, New Delhi are as follows:

Galleries and Displays, Gandhi Literature Centre (sales counter), Special Exhibitions are open between 9.30 AM to 5.30 PM on every Monday.

The Library, Photo Section, Audio Visual Section, Administration are open from 10.00 AM to 5.00 PM on Mondays, 2nd Sunday of the month and all gazetted holidays.

The Gandhi Museum, New Delhi includes the following features:

Photographic Gallery – Models of Gandhiji’s home in Porbandar, a large-scale ‘Satyagraha’ motif, Gandhiji’s ‘Talisman’, ‘India of My Dreams’, Gandhiji nursing Parchure Shastri, 300 photographs of Mahatma Gandhi in chronological order, relics of Mahatma Gandhi, his family tree, sculpture by Ram Suttar, items of clothing and bedding, photographs of Gandhiji’s last days in Birla House, the eleven vows’ of Gandhiji and so many others things related to bapuji is collected here.

Art Gallery- it contains 46 selected paintings, sculpture pieces, sketches and special pieces of art. The Spinning Wheel Gallery is a part of this section.

Special Exhibitions- sometimes special exhibitions are put up for the visitors.

Gandhi Literature Centre

Library – it boasts one of the largest available collections of books and documents on Mahatma Gandhi. The library is divided in various sections for books in English and in Hindi, Urdu, Gujarati, Marathi, Bengali, Punjabi and other foreign languages. Computerized Catalogue is also available. Other materials available in the library are 2,000 bound volumes of Periodicals and Mahatma Gandhi Papers like the letters written by Gandhiji.

A number of books and pamphlets have been published by the Museum since 1997. Some of the popular contributions in English are Pietermaritzburg Railway Station: The Start of the Journey from Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi to Mahatma Gandhi.and Birth of Free India’s National Anthem: A Gift from Netaji Subhas Bose.
