Udaigiri, the largest of the Buddhist complexes, had its earlier name as Madhavapura Mahavihara. Located with a huge hill as its backdrop, excavations at Udaigiri site revealed a large brick monastery, an inscribed step-well and numerous rock cut sculptures. Studies show that these monasteries existed between 7th and 12th centuries A.D.
