Who built Jawahar Kala Kendra

In 1986, Charles Correa, a late architect from MIT, designed and built JKK. This temple was built according to the 9-house mandala concept (Nagargraha, nine planets, nine squares). Shankar Dayal Sharma, the President of India, inaugurated it on April 8, 1993.

History of Jawahar Kala Kendra

The construction of this cultural center of Jaipur was started in the year 1986. After its completion in the year 1991, Jawahar Kala Kendra was opened to public. An initiative of State Government, Jawahar Kala Kendra is one of the most important cultural centers in Rajasthan.

Since the year of its inception Jawahar Kala Kendra has been hosting various musical and dance shows. Theater workshops, performances and concerts, amphitheaters, festival celebrations, cinema shows, art exhibitions of both national and international levels, arts and crafts exhibitions are held almost regularly in this famous cultural institute.

Architecture and Layout of Jawahar Kala Kendra

Jawahar Kala Kendra is divided into seven sections. The first is the House of Museums that houses ethnic pieces of art reflecting the folk culture of Rajasthan. In the House of Theatres, tourists get to watch plays that have high literary importance. In the Arts gallery of this cultural institute, arts as well as crafts that have been created by famous artists are displayed. There is a studio that mainly exhibits sculptures and paintings of renowned artists. Books as well as magazines are stored in the library of this cultural center. Theatres of Jawahar Kala Kendra

The theatre at Jawahar Kala Kendra presents performances by students, artists, and scholars. There are three theatres - one open and two closed. In the open theatre, many youngsters perform plays, dances, or other culturally eloquent performances. The other two theatres are Rangayan and Krishnan. Rangayan specializes in showcasing modern plays and playwrights. Nevertheless, Krishnayan is known for hosting Rajasthani festivals that draw artists from all over the country.
