Meera Kala Mandir is an important cultural institute of Udaipur that helps in the preservation of the age old culture and tradition of the state.

Meera Kala Mandir was established with an aim to promote dance and music. Mainly classical music and various dance forms of India are promoted in this cultural center of Udaipur. Principally dedicated for preserving the lesser known traditional dance forms of Rajasthan, Meera Kala Mandir has made 30 dance forms and music popular among the different people. The center is mainly devoted for the preserving classical dance and music of the Indian subcontinent. Meera Kala Mandir has played a significant role in making entertainment in Udaipur very popular throughout India. The institute is dedicated to Devotee Meera.

Establishment of Meera Kala Mandir

Dance exponent Shri Prakash Verma in cooperation with other famous scholars, artists and social workers established Meera Kala Mandir in the year 1955. Registered under Societies Act, this public institution is run with the aid of State Government. This renowned cultural institute has the association of Rajasthan Music and Drama Academies.

Festivals organized by Meera Kala Mandir

Meera Kala Mandir also organizes a number of dance festivals. Some of the most important dance festivals hosted by this institute are Vrandawani Ras, Mayur Dance, Devdasi Dance, Darudi Dance, Hathan Main Hariyo Rumal, Chirmi Dance, Suvatiya Sasriya Dance, Banjara, Bhawai Dance, Devario Dance, Dangi Gujari Dance, Gorbandh, Karishma Dance, Rajasthan’s Ghoomer, Kaliya Dance, Meera Dance, Thumari Dance, Darudi Dance, Neem Ki Nimboli Dance, Kanjar Dance, Maha Raas, Tera Taal Dance, Rupala Jhamkudi Dance and Mera Bharat Mahaan.

Objectives of Meera Kala Mandir

In addition to the different dance festivals organized by Meera Kala Mandir, some of the important objectives are also followed by this institute which is mentioned in the following:

  • Coordinating artistic interests with the help of various art forms in both urban and rural areas
  • Researching Meera Literature and at the same time engaging in the publication of this literature
  • Arranging for various cultural performances to create artistic interests and awareness in the society
  • Forming training centers for promotion of both dance and music
  • Producing documentaries mainly dance dramas which will be based on life of Meera.

Other Activities of Meera Kala Mandir

Apart from these, some other festivals are also celebrated in Meera Kala Mandir. Some of the special occasions celebrated in this institute include Meera Birth Anniversary, which is celebrated for three days on full moon of the season of winter to spring. During this festival various other functions related to Devotee Meera are also held like Meera dance competition, Meera light Music and Meera Peeth Lectures.
