Located in Himachal Pradesh state, amid the mighty Himalayan Mountains, Spiti is a beautiful and serene valley. Remotely placed, it doesn’t have its own railway station or airport but it is still easily accessible. Here is how to reach Spiti:
The nearest airport to Spiti region is the Kullu Airport at Bhuntar, Kullu. This airport is well-connected to the important cities of the country. One can rent a cab or taxi to reach the destination. The journey is somewhere around 5 hours.
The nearest railway stations to Spiti valley are Joginder Nagar railway station, and Shimla railway station. To reach the valley, you can rent a taxi from the railway station or can also board a bus going to Spiti.
Spiti is well-connected by road to the other cities and the adjoining states from, May to November. You can board the Himachal Pradesh state transport buses and other private buses from Manali, traveling past the Kunzum La pass, or can rent jeeps and cars to reach Spiti. There is another road that travels north from Shima via Kinnaur district till the Spiti valley.
While some roads are open all around the year, there are others such as those through Kunzum pass, which get completely covered with snow and thus are not accessible. The two alternative routes to reach Spiti by road are:
One is via Manali: Manali – Rohtang Pass – Gramphu – Chattru – Kunzum Pass – Kaza (Spiti Valley)
The other one via Shimla – Kinnaur Valley as Shimla – Kinnaur – Nako – Sumdo (Spiti Valley) – Tabo – Kaza.
